Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) & Frequent FAQ’s

Many students are enrolled in a private plan through their employer, a parent, spouse, or another family member, or a public health insurance plan such as TennCare, Medicaid, or Medicare. Although most students are covered under one of these plans, the Student Health Center cannot bill these plans for charges associated with office visits.

Because students can be charged for some services at the SHC, after paying for their services, they may request an itemized statement of services to file with their own private health insurance company for reimbursement purposes; however, reimbursement is not guaranteed.

Additionally, students with public health insurance such as Tenncare, Medicaid, and Medicare, are not eligible for reimbursement for their charges.

Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP)

Health insurance is also available through the university for students who meet eligibility requirements.

This insurance is referred to as the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). This is optional major medical health insurance for domestic students and required major medical insurance for international students. If you are not currently covered by a health insurance plan or may otherwise be interested in purchasing a new plan, read more about how the university-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) works.
