Vaccination

Widespread vaccination significantly reduces your risk from infectious diseases and the risk of spread in the community and households.

Keeping your vaccinations up-to-date throughout your life is important. Immunity wanes over time, and as you enter adulthood, your risk for different diseases changes. Some vaccines, like the flu vaccine, you need to get annually to protect yourself against seasonal illness. Some, like HPV, provide powerful, lifelong protection but may not have been prioritized during your childhood and adolescent vaccination. Some, like the COVID-19 vaccine, should be updated as we learn more about the illness they protect against and the immunity they provide. And some are more important if you travel or work in some professions. This Center for Disease Control and Prevention website has more information about vaccines that may be appropriate for your age and circumstances.

Talking about vaccines

Talking about vaccines can be challenging, and it can be difficult to know what sources you can trust. If you have questions about vaccine safety or whether a particular vaccine is right for you, ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist. If you want to be a vaccine advocate in your community or friend group and feel comfortable sharing your story, check out the Center for Health Education & Wellness’ Share Your Story site for some tips that can help you have productive conversations.

Recommended Vaccines

COVID-19

The university strongly recommends that all students, faculty, and staff stay up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccination. That includes completing a primary vaccine series and all boosters that are recommended for you. The vaccines are safe, effective, and free. Being fully vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself and gives you the best chance for a full college experience.

Updated boosters that target the Omicron variant specifically are now available at the Student Health Center Pharmacy and in the community. Anyone over the age of 12 who is fully vaccinated and received their last dose of a vaccine at least 2 months ago is qualified.

COVID-19 vaccines are available Monday – Friday at the Student Health Center Pharmacy, and we will be hosting vaccine clinics throughout campus all fall.
