Student Health Emergencies on Campus
The Student Health Center is not an Emergency Room or a Walk-in Urgent Care Center. Faculty members encountering a student with emergent or urgent health issues should:
1. Render immediate aid as appropriate.
2. Call EMS (911).
3. For a responsive student who refuses EMS (911) transport, encourage the student to contact the SHC Telephone Triage Nurse (865) 974-5080, option 7, to receive a call back from a healthcare professional who will discuss their health issue with them and provide guidance for further evaluation and treatment. Note: This is not an emergency call line. Students will receive a return call based on the order in which their call is received and the acuity of their reported health problem.
Non-emergent/urgent Student Health Concerns
For a student experiencing a non-emergent/urgent illness or injury,
1. Render aid as appropriate.
2. Encourage the student to contact the SHC Telephone Triage Nurse (865) 974-5080, option 7, to receive a call back from a healthcare professional who will discuss their health issue with them and provide guidance for further evaluation and treatment. Note: This is not an emergency call line. Students will receive a return call based on the order in which their call is received and the acuity of their reported health problem.
***If the student is experiencing an emergent or urgent health issue, call EMS (911).***
Medical Excuses
Students who need to be excused from class due to an illness or injury are advised to complete the online Health and Illness Support Form. A medical excuse from a healthcare professional is not required for the form to be completed.
