Influenza (Flu) Vaccine Requirement

The UT Board of Trustees has approved an emergency resolution authorizing the UT System to require CDC- or Tennessee Department of Health–recommended Influenza vaccines for faculty, staff, and students at each campus and institute across the state.

Vaccination requirements are established to protect the health and safety of the university community and are based on the advice of public health experts.

Flu Vaccine Exemptions

Students whose Spring 2021 semester classes will be fully online and who will not be living on or visiting campus during the Spring 2021 semester may be exempted from this requirement with submission and approval of the Flu Vaccine Exemption Form. Other reasons for exemption could include an Exemption for Medical or Religious reasons.

Exemption requests must be submitted by uploading a hard copy of the completed exemption request to your medical portal.

    • If you cannot upload the exemption request, email a photocopy to immunizations@utk.edu
    • You must then wait an additional 72 hours for a confirmation email (your UTK email address only).

Influenza (Flu) Vaccination

As the CDC has noted, the flu vaccine will be more important than ever in the 2020–21 flu season because of the potential for the flu and COVID-19 to be spreading at the same time. Flu vaccinations protect individuals, prevent additional stress on health care resources, and decrease the chances of a flu outbreak masking a COVID-19 outbreak.

Review the CDC’s frequently asked questions about flu and COVID-19.

  • All members of the campus community will need a flu shot unless they receive an exemption.
  • The flu shot requirement is based on the advice of public health experts.
  • The flu vaccine is typically available in early October. Members of the campus community will be asked to have the shot before the start of the spring semester in January 2021.
  • Flu vaccinations can be obtained at local health departments, any health care provider, and many pharmacies.

CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses. Getting a flu vaccine during 2020-2021 will be more important than ever.

Flu vaccines will not prevent COVID-19, but they will reduce the burden of flu illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths on the health care system and conserve scarce medical resources for the care of people with COVID-19. Visit CDC’s website for more information about flu vaccine benefits.
