The Primary Care Clinic (PCC) is the largest of the Health Center’s primary clinical areas. Most of our Physicians serve as Primary Care Providers. The PCC is where most patients “go to see the doctor”. Most all non-emergent illnesses and injuries can be appropriately addressed in the PCC, from routine cold and sinus problems to muscle or skeletal injuries and even chronic medical problems like asthma and high blood pressure.
Appointments are available in advance and same-day. We request that patients with non-urgent issues such as mild cough, sore throat, or cold symptoms without fever or shortness of breath; requests for new medications or refills; or non-painful rashes unrelated to medications, schedule an advanced appointment. Same day appointments are for those who cannot wait a day or two to be seen or who initially scheduled in advance, but whose symptoms have since worsened.
All of the Physicians in the PCC are board-certified in one of the primary care specialties, including Family Practice, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics. Generally, patients elect to start with a particular Provider and then see them routinely for their healthcare needs while enrolled at the University. However, patients may be seen by any available Provider when necessary. If you have recently been seen by a Provider at the Health Center and are not improving or are worsening, for continuity of care purposes, you should be seen by that same Provider for any recheck or work-in evaluation.
Appointments in the PCC may be scheduled by using the Online Scheduling/Student Health Portal or by calling an Appointment Clerk at (865) 974-3648.
Special Note Regarding Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Assessment and Treatment:
Assessments for ADD/ADHD are not performed in the PCC and refills on ADD/ADHD medications are not provided through the PCC. Additional information regarding initial assessment for ADD/ADHD and/or arrangements for treatment of ADD/ADHD may be obtained through the Student Counseling Center at: (http://counselingcenter.utk.edu/) or by calling (865) 974-2196.
